The other day, I took a lovely small group of clients on a day trip to Essaouira and for some reason it was just one of those magical days which seemed perfectly effortless and reminded me why I love what I do.
We rolled it out in the morning armed with TheKitchn, a cup of coffee, and the subdued little thrill that can only come from a road trip. The drive there was easy, with great conversation, views of the desert, and a fast roadside stop for fresh argan oil and warm bread that a vendor sold us. Already, the energy felt right.
The moment we arrived in Essaouira, the wind smacked us in the face — cool, salty and utterly reviving after the desert heat. I could see the city begin to work its magic immediately. We roamed aimlessly around the medina, sniffing out grilled fish and spices, and I took them to a couple of my favorite under-the-radar shops for local ceramics and textiles. They were curious, laid-back and genuinely grateful for everything — asking questions, tasting different items, actually living in the moment.
Lunch was a simple one: grilled sardines by the port, eaten by hand, in laughter, gazing at seagulls squabbling above the fishing boats. I don’t think I’ve ever had clients that relaxed that fast — they made me feel like I was on vacation, too.
After lunch, we wandered the ramparts, burst-snapping photos in the golden sunlight, and finished the day with a peaceful mint tea on the beach, watching kitesurfers dance over the waves. And as the sun began to slide, one of them said, “This feels like a movie,” and yeah, it kinda did.
I drove home with a full heart, and thanked my lucky stars for good people, perfect weather, and the sheer joy of sharing a place I love. Essaouira is never a letdown, but the company made it memorable, this time around!
